In a move which initially received mixed results it seems as though redevelopment plans for the Star City Casino are set to go. Just recently we have seen the release of plans for a shopping mall underneath the hotel / casino complex, utilising a tunnel which leads to the harbour and had remained under utilised for some time. But the more controversial part of the redevelopment includes the creation of Australia’s largest outdoor gambling area, a move which will bypass the new smoking ban.
While it is the smoking area which has received much of the press headlines the project itself is on a very large scale and set to cost in the region of AUS$300 million. The five star hotel will have 300 bedrooms and a shopping mall where visitors can pick up every day goods and then move on to the casino.
Local authorities seem sympathetic towards the new venture and there are hopes that the project will receive approval in the short term. Whether this will create a new trend towards underground shopping malls and gambling facilities for smokers remains to be seen but it is a very interesting attempt to grab a slice of the smoking market.
