Should Casinos Be Smoke Free?

Sunday 25th May 2008

If there is one thing which is splitting the opinion of casino players down the middle it is the ongoing attempt by many states to outlaw smoking in casinos altogether. While there are many players and fans in both camps some traditionalists feel that a total ban on smoking would take away some of the personality and atmosphere of playing the tables. On the other hand there are many existing players and others who would visit casinos if they were smoke free zones.

While those in each camp seem uninterested in considering the others position it looks like many states in the US will be forced to make difficult decisions. In reality they are in a no win situation whatever they do and will no doubt be on the end of a number of legal challenges and compensation claims either way.

One possible answer to the problem would be to allow smoking and non-smoking casinos, affectively giving casino players the chance to choose for themselves. However, this would leave the question of which casino developments would be smoke free and which would allow smoking. All in all the partial smoking ban was a bad idea with many believing that the states should have either banned it outright or left the situation as it was.
