New Lottery Winner Jonathan Vargas Worried About His Safety
Friday 23rd May 2008
Jonathan Vargas is running scared at the age of just 19 after he won the $35.3 million Powerball jackpot last week. It seems that Vargas has been warned that a number of people are planning attacks or blackmail attempts in order to extract some of his new found wealth. Such is the threat that he is in the process of hiring bodyguards this week to track his every step!
While many people will be sitting back and wondering what is going on, there have been numerous reports of past Lottery winners attracting undue attention. Suddenly they have friends they never knew, they have begging letters everyday and the pressure of everyday life has become unbearable for some.
Construction worker Vargas announced that of the $17milliion lump sum he has chosen to take (with the balance to follow in annual instalments) he will be buying a new house and ensuring that his family and friends are looked after. He has also pleaded not to become the centre of attention in the press as he hopes to slip away quietly into the background.
At just 19 years of age Vargas is one of the largest Lottery winners for his age and sure to be headline news for some time yet, whether he likes it or not.
