Barney Frank, Ron Paul and One Million Poker Players Look To Overturn US Ban

New bill attempts to overhaul the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act 2006

Monday 5th May 2008

The Poker Players’ Alliance have put all their chips on the proposal of Rep. Barney Frank, who, along with Rep. Ron Paul, is seeking to overturn the 2006 UIGEA.

The 1 million-strong PPA began to lobby Congress in mid-April, flooding offices with almost 20,000 letters in the last month. In addition they have attended Washington town hall meetings and flown to meet with lawmakers.

The alliance is behind Rep. Frank's new bill, which would negate the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, a law that prohibits the transfer of funds between online gambling sites and US financial institutions.

outline methods of enforcement, the responsibility falls on the Fed and Treasury.

Guidelines proposed in October of last year would require banks and financial institutions to identify and block transfers from unlawful Internet gambling sites.

'The ban on Internet gambling infringes upon two freedoms that are important to many Americans: the ability to do with their money as they see fit and the freedom from government interference with the Internet,' Rep. Frank said.
