Dice Man, Ricky does have defense (he couldn't have gone so many fights if he has no defense), he just fought the wrong fight last night...
Credit to Mayweather, he had Hatton sussed from the first bell. Every time Hatton went forward, Floyd throw the right hand lead, caught Hatton, then grabbed on so Ricky couldn't fight on the inside. The referee for the first 2 rounds at least, was making it a 2 on 1 fight IMO but Ricky was outclassed later on in the fight. No excuses. Greadually the punches took their toll and Floyd opened up- Hatton's tactics were painful to watch because he couldn't get any shots off at all because Mayweather was smothering everything he did- and Floyd was timing some brutal shots...when entering the clinches and coming out of them- the left hook that put ricky down first was well timed and evidence Ricky was out of his league there. Conclusion- Mayweather was a light middleweight coming down to Welter to fight a light welter moving up to make mega money- the size difference was evident throughout the entire fight. Combined with Mayweather's slick defense- he kept dodging and grabbong on at all the right times, Ricky was just fighting a losing battle from the off. Mayweather= an all time great Hatton= Get back down to fighting guys your own size mate! (Light welterweight) |

You know, I've been thinking about the referee in this fight- I was very angry during the first few rounds. OK, Hatton's last fight was against Castillo, where there was plenty of clinchin and fighting on the inside. Same referee as last night. Cortez. He lets them fight on the inside, hardly breaking them up- letting them work out of it... Ricky tries to get on the inside last night and Cortez was in so fast they hardly got into a clinch. I'm not saying Ricky would have won, but he wasn't given the chance to IMO because his best chance of success was early on... Makes you wonder how much 'extra' he was paid to keep the fight on the outside which clearly suited Mayweather. Mayweather was catching Ricky coming in with his speed then clinching- Ricky has worked to get inside but Cotez splits them up and Ricky has to start all over again, eating right hand leads to do so- which had taken their toll by the 4th round. It is supposed to be a one on one fight but early on the ref made the fight be fought in a way that suited Mayweather- punch and clinch- ref steps in to give Mayweather a hand and on and on... I just don't understand why Cortez was so different in his approach last night- makes you wonder who, and exactly how much the big men in Vegas where betting on Floyd ... |

Watching the match last night, I think there was only ever going to be one winner in this fight. The referee didn't get out of hand IMO. Hatton isn't even in the same league as Mayweather. I've seen a few Mayweather matches before and his opponents didn't seem that good, and Mayweather usually didn't destroy them hence he didn't look like the best boxer in the world by any means. But watching last night there was just a huge gap in quality between the two, to the point where Mayweather made Hatton look like an amateur or UFC fighter. He can't defend himself. He only defends himself with his chin. In the past he's only fought inferior boxers and good brawlers, and never met anybody near Mayweather's quality.

The ref did put the fight in Mayweather's favour early on when Ricky had a chance. Hatton was actually tired by the 4th round- just shows how hard he was trying to get in there- Hatton's plan was to get inside and bully Mayweather, but everytime he got into his zone, Cortez took him back out and Hatton has to start over every few seconds- not good for Hatton's chances... Just imagine how Ricky felt- he works hard to get where he wants Mayweather and the ref keeps making him move back once he gets there- this extra effort created by the ref helping Mayweather early on meant ricky was tired and frustrated by the 4th round. Combine this with Mayweather's speed and accuracy and Hatton never stood a chance. There was only going to be one winner- Hatton was weak again at the weight and he needs to move back down but saying Hatton defends with his chin and has only fought 'inferior brawlers' is laughable and the typical comment of a one off fan of boxing who only ever have a comment when the mega fights are on. |

I wouldn't call myself an expert on boxing, but like any subject I'm not an expert on, I go and find sources that are experts, and from quite a lot of reading on the subject that is the conclusion I and many have come to. I've never seen a boxing match won by the one fighter who can be hit by his opponent in the face at his opponent's leisure. There's a good reason why the referee kept pulling them apart, because Hatton wasn't boxing. Inside-fighting is not boxing. Mayweather is a boxer. And even if you take the first 5 or so rounds, Hatton had hardly touched Mayweather. He'd been the aggressor and Mayweather had been on the defensive, but there's a good reason why they call him Pretty Boy, nobody can hit him. Whereas Hatton was cut open early and most of his face was swollen, just as a result of Mayweather's jabs.
