Hello to all, and especially FreeZey if you still check these pages.
I've just got back from Cardiff where I played in my first live (non online) tournament. Only decided at last moment to play, hence my reason for not posting before now..
The tourney was £5 + 50p to enter giving you 500 chips (4 x 100 chips, and 4 x 25 chips). Unlimited rebuys for the first 90 mins, after which there was a top up allowed.
61 entered, and I finished in 17th place which I was pretty happy about for my first attempt at a land based tourney. The only way is up from here!
A lot of fun though, and I will definitely be attending next Tuesday night! Will probably make a habit of it from now on... Total cost for the night: £15 + beers and food.. Pretty good value I reckon.
There were certainly some interesting characters to play against too![]()

Back in from another attempt at the Cardiff tournament. 60 entrants this week. I finished in 4th place
Made a silly mistake towards the end where I threw away 3rd place.
Guy in 4th place makes a pre-flop pot raise after the joint chip-leader folds. I make a re-raise rasing to the pot again. Guy to my left (other joint chip-leader) folds.
Cards are turned over, K T me, K 8 guy in 4th place.
Flop: J 8 K
Turn: 8
River: J
So, guy in 4th place wins pot with Full House, 8's full of Kings.
Turns out guy to my left had J Q and had folded thinking that at least one of us had pocket Queens, Kings or Aces.
My view now is that I may have silly to re-raise, when if I hadn't the guy to my left may have called and helped to knock out the 4th place player. Especially as his cards would have infact won in the end (Full house Jack's full of 8's, versus Full House 8's full of Kings).
As it stood, I walked away with £125, and not the £190 I'd have got for 3rd place.
What does everyone else think about my tactic to raise again. My reasoning was that the guy in 4th place was bluffing (which he was), and that my pocket cards would be better than his pocket cards (which they were). I was also fairly short stacked at this point compared to the two chip leaders. Therefore I raised again to hopefully ensure that the chip leader folded, and meant my pocket cards would beat the bluffed pocket cards. Didn't anticipate the flop being the way it was though :o
Still, a good result for the night - this was only my third 'live' tournament, and an improvement on last weeks 17th place
I also finished 2nd in my second live game last night (Monday night) at Triangle Casino's £20 pot limit game in Bristol. Will post about this some other time.

I WAS THERE! I finished 11th (second time I’ve missed the money by a single chair)Originally Posted by monkeymagic
I was short stacked and trying to wait out 2 other players who were similarly low. I picked up pocket kings off the blind and my all in raise was called by a Chinese guy called Peter (good player who’s there every week). He turns over AKos then hits his ace straight off the flop.
I was gutted. There was no chance of a straight or a flush and with there was only one king left, which I didn’t hit.
Well done mate!Originally Posted by monkeymagic

I think you played it fine and got a bad beat. Your raise knocked out the lesser hand that could have outdrawn you and you got a full call from an underdog.
I’m going tonight so might see you there!
Didn’t do very well in last nights game. I came approx 35 of 55
I picked up some good hands early on, but couldn’t get any action. So much so that I started to steal blinds and advertise my bluffs.
In the end I was taken out along with 3 others by a high stacked player who called our all-in’s with just pocket 5’s and made a flush (after 2 of the players had over paired him).
Funniest hand of the night was on the table next to mine. One player all-in preflop, one caller.
P1. AT
P2. KQ
Flop T6Q
Turn A
River Q
The cards were dealt very slooooowly and almost like a good rally in tennis the jubilation went back and forth between players. Playing on-line has it’s advantages but you do miss out on the atmosphere you get from playing in a casino face to face.
Hey Freezey, yep still check these forums occasionally..
I haven't been to the Cardiff game for a couple of weeks due to playing in the Bristol tournament instead (£20 PL at Triangle Casino in Bristol).
I didn't do too well the last time I played in Cardiff and finished about 40ish out of 60 in Bristol last week - one of my worst ever results, and a fairly expensive night too (£20 buy in, 3 rebuys, 1 top up = £100).. I then proceeded to tilt like crazy in a ring game that was organised afterwards and lost another £100.. Ouch!
I agree with you about the atmosphere of playing in a live game.. It's a lot more fun, and the 4 or 5 hours or so spent playing seems to pass a lot quicker than the equivalent time spent playing online.
I've checked your www.freezey.com site out, and have seen your photo now, so will be sure to say 'hello' if you are at the Cardiff tournament the same time I am (if I go again)..
But, at the moment, I slightly prefer the Bristol game, even though some of the entrants do seem to take it a little *too* seriously!
That's probably due to the stakes and prizes involved though... Last week places 2 > 5 got £500 each (after agreeing a deal to split the cash), the winner got £750 or so.. Unfortunately I wasn't one of the winners, but my mate James finished in joint 2nd
Admin / Mods: Any chance I can change my name from MonkeyMagic to Mango (as that is the name I use whilst playing online!)..
