It would have to be done on a venue by venue basis, but I know if I ran a pub then I'd have this going - it would attract the punters. |

i dont no if all venues would want to pay out more money than they have to. I no my local put on food which is money spent out of their pockets.
Now the gambling laws have slightly changed and money is allowed to be gambled, why not set up a mini cash league, where if everyone say paid £2 a game then over the month this could mount up to the last game of that month. The winner would pocket a nice little wager. This could keep people regulary coming back with the incentive to pocket a few quid and also adding to their league points. Thats my 2 euros anyway! |

true. I've qualified for the WSOP main event final playoff so winning games doesn't give me anything now, except a load of points, which wont be much good to me seeing as I'm not going to get enough to qualify for the monthly final.
good bump tony |

It is always good to bump up your tally of wins for bragging rights though.

I wonder if this is what happened to the Weston-super-Mare league? They used to have four times as many games a week as everyone else (one venue even regularly had two consecutive games on the same night), but what can happen then is that few people are prepared to spend six nights a week playing poker to have a chance at the leaderboard, and everyone else drifts away because it's less fun if you're just making up the numbers and hoping to limp into the monthly final as an also-ran. (Making the games less attractive to the host pubs, as they're getting fewer drinkers for their money.) Now, WSM doesn't have a league at all.
In Bath, for example, the last leaderboard winner (the organiser) had played 10 games more than anyone else, and (possibly) as a result of that fields are getting so thin that we couldn't even fill the 20 allocated places for the grand final. Typical turnout now is about 16-18 whereas previously, with half as many weekly games as there are now, people were being turned away from jam-packed venues with 45 players already seated. At least a medal is a tangible, permanent prize that people will turn up to play for. And it's hard to see why they're not being made any more in the first place - the pubs are still paying to host the league, right? |

(Funnily enough, I was talking about the number-of-games issue on here all the way back in February 2006. My constructive suggestion? Only count a player's best 8 or 10 games per month...)
Leaderboard for each venue? |

Exactly what I said Fella (got to love Walt)
The league would be greatly improved with 8-10 best finishes for a number of different reasons 1) People who only play 5 or 6 games a month might be encouraged to play just once more a week as they have something to aim for and something to show for their efforts. 2) People might now consider playing in other venues where there are larger number of runners to try to get a higher score esp. at the end of the month A lot of the pubs have become stale as its the same 9 ppl playing each other week in week out for the easy points in the middle of nowhere. 3) There are a lot of good players now in the league who are considering just going to the casino or the side games as at a lot of the venues you can just turn up and be in the points for the monthly final, but its not worth the effort to play as there is not a lot more to play for. People such as Burkey, ginger John, Tony1leg, liam 1 and 2, Mike Morris, Mike Abbott, Little Angry, Some of the guys from tyds and Bolton (Can only play about 10 games), Andy/dave, Calling Carl and Calling keith. These are the ppl (Sorry cant name them all) who support the league but have no chance of winning the league. If 8/10 games were introduced it would bring some spark back into the league. I have nothing against Dave/Walt/howard etc who play all the time but if something like this was introduced they would not be discouraged from the league and I think everyone else would be encouraged. Sorry for the essay |

If your talking about a small medal that the winner of the league gets, then it would be far easier to remove that prize for all the grief that it seems to get, then the league will be just for the purpose of qualifying and the National Average Leaderboard will be the Trophy as it always has for the player with the best average at the end of the month.....simple |
