Hehehe, the wonderful world of volatility eh John !!
If your free bet is on the "Total Goals" market then there will be a quote, say, 2.3-2.5. If you choose to go higher than 2.5 goals in the Man U v Chelsea game and the result is indeed 3-2, then you will make 2.5 (the difference between the 2.5 buy quote and the total goals, 5, in the match) x £30 (your free stake) on the game - ie: £75.
And, obviously because your bet is free you cannot lose, so a 1-0 result, which would normally lose you 1.5 x £30 (£45) would be voided - you would simply win nowt.
Of course you could always go low, and sell at 2.3 and hope for a mind numbing dull bore draw - but that wouldn't be any fun eh !! hehe.
Hope this is clear - If you want any spread betting tips, please dont ask me - I once staked £2 on a cricket match and lost £402 !!!
Ouch.
