Tomb Raider 2; a damp squib...?

My personal review.

This month saw the release of the long-awaited & much hyped up new Microgaming slot Tomb Raider - Secret of the Sword (dubbed by most slot addicts as Tomb Raider 2).

I was as excited and keen to play as anyone else because MG had come out with some great new slots recently and Tomb Raider 1 is one of my 'old favourites'. This new one promised not 1, not 2, but 3 great & different bonus features, and on the face of it they are really great;

Super Mode: You are randomly awarded 5 free-spins, but during those spins Lara appears & 'shoots out' 3 reel positions of the 15 in view turning them into fixed wilds for the duration of the rest of your spins. I've never seen this feature on any other slot & it can be very good.

'Rolling Reels' Free-spins: Again a totally unique feature; 3 or more scatters trigger 10 free-spins... with a reel twist! If your spin results in a winning combination, all the symbols in that combination explode and are removed from the reels. Then the symbols above slide down to fill the spaces giving you the chance of further wins. Not only that, but each time this happens the win multiplier increases by x1, up to a maximum of x5! Exciting & potential for some decent wins.

Global Adventure Bonus: This feature is triggered by accumulating a passport on each of the 5 reels; each time a passport lands in the central position of a reel that reel is 'highlighted'. Highlight all 5 reels to start the bonus feature. You travel the globe looking for 5 pieces of the Sacred Sword and collecting random cash prizes. But each location has traps to hinder your quest - hit 2 of these & your journey is over.

The graphics & sounds on this slot are totally awsome - I would actually rate it as the best I have ever seen in this department from any slot I have EVER played.
But the slot is badly let down by the winnings potential, or rather the lack of it. The free-spins are usually pretty reasonable, but the Global Bonus must be seen as the main feature on this slot because it can take many 100's of spins to trigger it. Yet of the 4 times I got this feature it gave me nothing twice. Yes, I do mean NOTHING! In the first location I found 2 traps with my first 2 picks and that's game over - not even a consolation prize. The 2 times I did win something, it was not a lot.

For a slot to be truly successful it needs to be highly entertaining AND have the potential for a big payout.

Tomb Raider 2 scores 10/10 in entertainment, but 1/10 for pay-back.
I recommend this one for 'fun mode' play only!

I very rarely go to B&M casinos or even arcades any more. When I do go to the casino I'm more likely to play Blackjack, Roulette or enter a poker tourney - but it's been over a year since I last went. Whereas I play online every day!

Yes - you can play all Microgaming slots in 'free-play' mode, except the progressive jackpot slots.
