Bell Fruit Machine - Ticks when gambling in to the feature/money

Just been playing deal or no deal - power of five and was wondering what the 3 ticks mean when you are gambling before a feature. I think on the bell fruit site they say they are 'lives' but is this on the number gambles when on the feature? I haven't really noticed any change with 3 ticks as opposed to no ticks.

Also, what features would you say are good? Power of five isn't all that in my experience.

If say your on £2.00 and you gamble and lose to 50p then if you have no ticks then your choice is either take 50p or exchange in. If you have a tick you have the chance to gamble again.
