Couple of weeks back saw me and my brother wandering around Nottingham. He knows I play a bit so casually mentioned he fancied a bit of a gamble on the fruities knowing full well I'd tag along. I never mention it to him..kind of a politeness thing even though he's a regular beer change player. So we go into the Namco crystal rooms in the Market Square. God the place has changed...it used to be full of hi tecs down stairs but these have all been replaced with lo tecs, part times, oxo clubs, bar x's of all varieties and plenty of magic 10's and the like. Being a Sunday the place wasn't heaving, there were just the usual hangers on and locals waiting for the next victim or hanging around one of their mates who was playing, each adding their own advice on what to do and each of course being more knowledgable than the other. With this in mind we went up the stairs and played in the very small hi tec section which was on 10p £8 JP. After a few minutes and some very dead machines we got bored and thought what the hell and went back downstairs to try our luck on the £25's.
I chose a Chuzzy chip bar x and my brother played the no.3 oxo club next to me. My bar x was set at £15 x's and £25 bars so I knew the wins were going to be few and far between so settled in to try for the streak. Being in a city centre arcade I knew I was most likely to be playing right off the back of a streak so knew I had at least an hour of fast playing ahead of me to get it round. My brother doesn't earn the largest of salaries and soon found himself £30 down on the oxo club without so much as a sniff on the top reels and went off to the bank. I tried to warn him not to get too involved but at the same time the 'player' in me didn't want to leave the machine for the vultures and of course I wanted to see my brother win a bit. The Chuzzy was going from bad to worse, I picked up wins here and there but over a period of 2 hours lost £160 in it and still didn't get the streak hold. My brother, more to my concern had at this point stuck £90 into the oxo and had been up top just once for a lousy £2. He just couldn't afford to lose anymore money...it was the equivalent of a regular player being down £500 on the day for him. It was at this point I decided enough was enough. The player in me had sat playing this chuzzy for the streak for the past 2 hrs and it was more than likely less than a few spins, maybe 10 mins playing time away max. But, to see the depressed look on my brothers face, the fact he was just waiting for me and he clearly wanted to get out of there, we just walked and I didn't even feel annoyed at not 'seeing things through' with my machine. It was clearly the saddest way to spend the afternoon.
As I'm lucky enough to have a salary that can afford a bit of disposable income I went to the bank and drew out some 'real' money for beer that evening. I told my brother we'd go out and have a few beers and try to forget about it all until he said he really was skint with nothing in the bank. You're right I said you've got nothing in the bank but you do have £90 in your pocket....as I gave him his 'losings' back. He wouldn't accept until I practically forced it into his shirt pocket. Some things just really aren't worth doing..and that afternoon stint in the arcade was one of them. I'm used to seeing losses like that but I don't like seeing my brother take a hit like that. Next time it's strictly spot the difference and cluedo on the itbox.

Good post m8, I see where your comming from, we've all hit the big lose at sometimes, & the feeling is shite, but what you described was worse, your brother must have been feeling sick to the stomach, especially when he admitted he really was skint, sort of makes you sit back & think doesn't it, I bet next time the two of you spend a few hours together it wont be playing the dreaded lo-techs again, imagine the difference if you both would have spent the combined losses on a mega night out, same outcome, but without the sick feeling in the stomach................until the morning after of course, excess beer & that.............enjoyed the post, thanks for sharing.

I know the feeling all to well.. I used ot do this kind of thing pretty much most days when I was just another munter. You do feel really sick physically and mentally but I am sure we have all experianced it in the past.

Just last night I lost £20 in casual playing of some machines I would never usually touch and even stuck £10 in a £5 JP machine for one board which gave one jp.

One of the best methods and skills you can possess as a fruit machine player is self control which I sometimes let go of and then things do start going bad.

Most 'players' will know how hard it it to leave a machine after some of your money has gone in and it for some reason can feel even worse when it is friend as they probably rarley experiance it.

I try to avoid playing fruit machines these days unless I know it is playing well or I know a method for it yet I seem to always try a few quid in any random machine when out drinking with mates but luckily they all stop me and it never gets to the stage where I am changing up notes or worse, I am sticking in notes.
Why has it come to this?

i know also what you mean, worse i have ever seen it is with my best mate. we went to the local pool house to play abit of poll, and abit of a gamble. before i knew it i had got on the thrid bord for the third time on pyscho cash beast, with only putting in 15 quid and it offering 40 i took it. while my best mate was playing this new 250 jp i hadnt seen before and first shot offered 75 quid, we both looked t each other and looked the bord up and down and the only way he could of died was rolling an 11. with my voice of reason telling him "mate you know its guna give you an 11" he took the money and we both went the picture anfd then a near by bar, where his luck saw him do the rare thing of a pound in and im bord.
he couldnt beileve his luck anyway we waited around the pictures for a few mates who work there, then went back to the pool place for a few frames. now my mate being up around 150 quid on the day thought why not try my luck on CARD SHARK!!!!
the devil of all machines, anyway i thought id go watch him and i asked how much you put in he sed aroun 30 with a face on him, so i knew it was around 50ish. anyway i saw why he was playing after i heard the quid slam the back and the bord give him red queens practically on a start. he got the queens and i sed why not take that it will probly atleast give you your money back and he repiled nor after about another 30 quid it'll pay jp.
then why got the mocal munter saying things there my 2 year old cusin knows "one more card nudge maaaattttteeeee and you got jp".
anyway before my freind knew it the machine went cold for about 40/50 pounds and at this point my mate had put all his winings for the day in this machine. and after about 100 of his own money this machine had still not payed out. i felt like kicking the crap out of this machine never mind my mate and i could tell by his face and by people say you still on that, that he didnt even want to continue polaying it. next quid he got on the bord and sed ill just take any thing and cut my loss's. i thought its abit daft now but he just wanted to get off there so i sed ok mate but ill stay if you want me to. then he got the red queens and said ill just take them. both of thinking it may go for around 40 and repeat, HAH it went for 15 thats right 15 and then as it was red it gave a super shot and went to 35!!!! we both went white in the face. and walked and i could tell he just felt sick and so did i watching him. thats probs the worst thing i ever seen gambling, as it was my best mate and a 250 jp thats was backing and playing well take around 300 and give out 35. who ever went on after us was probly laughing there tits off.

Hah yes, Im still not too sure whether it's good they have notechangers or not, makes it easier to play, but if you can't get change you won't play them.

Managing some discipline now, don't touch GGG and clones, Reds sometimes, bellfruits no, QPS no and some mazooma - cheers barcrest

Must say couldnt imagine losing £90 tho, thats why I'll never touch lo tecs, FOBTS and the like, and why I very rarely force a m/c now unless it's bursting at the seams - and Ive saved a hell of a lot more money from that

Another thing is it's so unsociable to play them when u are out, don't speak to mates, just stand in corner losing money, great. Best to get pissed and have a laugh

Card Shark club version can be a BRUTAL beast, seen many a player walk away totally skintified when this machine is on the take, I own the £25 AWP version, & even this can suck when in the mood, so dread to think what the clubber can do on a really bad day, the all too familiar sick to the stomach feeling, I'd say unless you've felt this, your lucky, hope never to go through one of those nights again.

good point on the gambling when out with mates.. really bad as I know.. I used to do it and now i have a mate who does it.. either wins or loses the whole night outs money..

Best to leave alone at the moment I reckon.. I aint got much about near me that is 'doable' and I have all but lost faith in my current streak timings (based on estimates of when about £300 have gone through) and most machines here are QPS and bellfruits and I dont touch them. ever.
Why has it come to this?

I never play on a night out.

If im on a night out......., im on a night out, simple as that.

I play machines simply to make money not for the social aspect or for pleasure (although i do admit its nice when you get a nice streak)

I have never quite understand when ppl say "I only have x and x machines round here"

Go and find something worth playing. Its hardly worth while playing the local town / city centre anyway as they are always well covered. IMO the worst mistake to make when playing machines is waiting for good machines to turn up in a hand full of local pubs. You must go to the machines and not let the machines come to you.

    Suburbia, is a wonderful place.

I do agree that the market is short of value at the moment and only a handful of machines out there worth playing. However, they are out there.

I totally agree with your post but i doubt when your out on a night out you never will play a machine. Good on you if you can.

I have found one or two red-hot machines while out on nights out (stay off these but make note for later) but sometimes If a machine is showing (I always keep an eye on machines even when not intending to play cause if a machine is ready for the streak then why leave it for someone else) Then i will go for it (but never on the red hot machines cause its worth while comming back later).

You gforget that not all people are like us. We if we know something about machine X then we will find/ask where that machine is (never ask "where is X" offline always ask when someone says "i was in the Dog and Slut last night and went on the bandit" ask "what did you play on?" never give the game away.

Some here will no dount be wanting to know whow to play the machine in their locals.

My failing si when im stupidly pissed where i become the biggest munter from muntervill, but that just proves your point and my rule "never play when pissed" but this have to be balanced with "the streak is ready i might as well go for it" and "How much is this machine going to be worth to me in the future when sober?" The latter statement can be read both ways(i.e. is it a red hot machine or just a bell fruit off its tits.)

Well...maybe the occasional play if the pub houses something i would normally play and we're staying for a couple. However i wont simply play for the fun of it. (eg if ive just taken VIU streak and the machine is dead, i wont continue playing) Neither will i play any machines i wouldnt normally play as its just not worth while.

If im honest i rarely go out drinking on famous pub to pub crawls that so many ppl my age enjoy.

Most central Middlesbrough / Stockton locations are worse than the smell of a tramps vest and the clientel are either too young or too off their heads to notice.

Too many bottles and fists flying about for my liking.

A couple of quiet ones and a sporting discussion in the local is more up my street these days.
