Tricky decision, i dont think he would call with A-9 as someone raised 4 times the big blind and had 3 callers, he knows he wouldnt be winning even if he thought he was getting a good price to play. It would be possible that he could have had 8-9 9-10, they are very good hands to play in a cash game when you are getting such great value, even more so when they are suited, would be a definate possibility. I personally wouldnt have put him on aces, unless hes very daring im not wanting to risk my aces against 4-5 oponents, im re-raising with aces to get rid of most of the others, if you call with aces in that position you really have no idea where you are, they could have a lower pp like 8-8 and if an 8 comes on a safe looking board your screwed. Q-Q or J-J are more probable though, he just flat called to take a look at the flop, when he is betting out and you are calling i would think i was winning with my Q-Q J-J and so when it gets to the river he finds it easy to get you off the pot by shoving knowing that you havent been playing strongly and dont feel too confident in your hand.
Hes almost certainly shoving for value though, given that they were both 3 buyins deep?

even if he had a 9 or AA in his hand why shove and scare off a small pair, retard play, you folded and he got no value, well played you, he should have sussed your range known your hand and known what to bet to extract value. imo he played like a nonce and you folded like a pro.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
