Stuck at home (due to snow) and despite my new year resolution of not playing online at all im very tempted to log in.
However, I have kinda come to the conclusion that there is zero point in playing tounaments with low stake buy ins and figure that unless its at least $30 entry you might as well just play roulette. Regardless of the poker site there are just too many bad players who do not know how to play for it to ever be profitable in the long run. Ive had far too many tournaments lost by idiots betting all in with K6 offsuit against my pocket Aces only to hit a king and a Six on the flop - higher staes surely means this donkey play is reduced?
Am i right?
I had this problem and conmtemplated playing higher buyins however if you can't beat these players you DON'T move up. Bad players can have any size of bankroll!
What I'd recommend is you keep going with the ABC style of play and stay away from the early, multiway, all in pots that are starting to show its ugly head again where your % chance drops with the more players that are in. Rememeber your hole cards are only 40% of your hand.
In these situations just get in for cheap, try to hit big & let them call you all the way.
In your average cheap-ass MTT (and by logical extension STT) you will see absolute carnage in the first half an hour; I frequently see fields of 1000+ slashed in half as the lemmings hurl themselves off the cliff with any pair in the first two levels. This alone makes it +EV to play these games, as you essentially have a guaranteed overlay!
It might be more annoying getting busted by rags, but I'd rather have an ROI of 10%+ and the odd broken mouse than an ROI of 0.000001% from playing nice, sensible games.
I played in the 25k (1500 r/hand f/roll) tourney last week. After the third break three players went all in. One with pkt 5s, one with pkt q, and one with 10 8 off.. none were short stacked..... i asked then and i ask now WHY???? (220 left in, With the top 130 getting paid)
It wasnt even a steal.. 5s raised, 10/8 called, qs over the top all in.

Against my better judgement I decided to play a couple of tournies on PS.
1st one came 9th out of 160 and made a massive $15 profit - not bad start.
In middle of a tournie right now (on first break) and ive already been reminded why im not convinced about online poker.
$20 entry so should be an ok standard but:
I hold AQ (diamonds) board comes up AQ3 (rainbow) - Im big stack and raise, guy next to me goes all in, he has been a bit haphazard with his calling range and so i call. He holds 93???? And guess what the turn and river are: yep 93.
Very next hand. Im BB and check with A3 Flop comes 55J. I continuation bet a small amount - two people fold and one calls.
The turn - both check.
The river - both check.
He is holding: pocket 5s giving him quads. I lose it at this point and cant help telling him on chat that he is an idiot - who in their right mind doenst bet on last two streets with quads???
OK thats it im giving up on all internet play - too much luck and not enough skill.
Last two tournies today.
2300 starters, down to last 600 people i have slightly above average left.
Dealt QQ and i raise 4 times BB, get one caller.
Flop comes low rainbow rags, I raise and then guy next to me goes all in (Hes got about 3k less chips than me) i call. He has AK and hits the F'in ace on the river.
3k chips left and next Hand i get AK I go all in and get called by a shorter stack who is holding KJ - he hits the J on the river - game over for me.
Next tournie sees my aces get called and crushed by 34 diamonds all in call and my Kings get crushed by J10 offsuit all in call - both after 1.5 hours of tournament play.
Yes you get bad beats in bricks and morter play - but you don't get half as many idiots for the simple reason on any of the above i would have taken the absolute mickey out of them calling with such junk. For every decent sized tournie you enter you have to dodge stupid calls from 60% of the runners to simply make it to the money.
Roll on the big defrost so i can leave my flat.
Er not sure, but I don't think its a continuation bet if you only checked preflop - what would you be "continuing" having shown no strength preflop? You bet a small amount so they have odds to call if they are on a draw. Can only assume the guy with quads kept checking hoping one of you would take a punt at a raggy board. Just be very happy an ace didn't come down. I think it's the great Scrote who says that so many people fail to bet for value on their good hands so that in itself isn't unusual.
Walking away is easy. The hard part is standing up.
