Hi, I am fairly new to poker, been playing for about 6 months now, and I've done bout 8/9 kive oker games. i've cashed once for 160 pounds, the rest top 30/20 finishes. Theres roughly 60-80 runners at my local casino, how am i doing? I cant play anything like every week, and online I'm not disciplined to not play drunk. Id like to be good, I'm hoping to buy a good poker book with xmas/birthjday money, any suugesstions? I know this is a lot to write, but my internet is slow, so I write what I can. i.ve heard a lot about Hartingans? Boyles Book, Whisch is better? Cost is an issue. Based on my stats, 1 cash in 8/9 games, should I even be playing in these sort of tourneys? the buy in is 10 pound rebuy or 30 pound semi-freeze-out? I play both.
Looks like you are starting at a fairly ambitious level, given that £20.00 for a book is a stretch for your bankroll. Hartingan's = Harrington? is prolly better choice as it concentrates on Hold'em, whereas Boyle's = Doyles's? looks at many different variants of poker, some of which you are unlikely to encounter, much less want to play as a beginner. £10.00 re-buy can, depending on the company you keep, be a donkfest for the first hour, you should be ready to invest £50.00 at least, £10.00 in + £10.00 instant rebuy + £10.00 add-on, leaving £20.00 for re-rebuy for if you get donked by a fishy suck-out. Try playing online on weekend mornings, on "US Friendly" sites, when it is more likely that your opponents rather than you have been on the sauce.
Try to find a local pub league or pub game where the buy-in is less likely to hurt, and the company more congenial.. Where are you? maybe some forum members could point you in the right direction..
On last thing; instead of books, consider magazine subsciptions.. only about £15.00 per year, sometimes with a free book for subbing, full of info PLUS, and this makes them worth the cover price alone, usually including entry to a very juicy tournament or two every month. I recommend "Inside Poker" for it's very dense and hgh quality tutorial sections.
Good luck, see you on the felt!

Use forums and good books, I suggest Supersystem 2 first then Phil Gordon's Little Green Book, then The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky.

Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
I have been playing poker since april 08, The first thing people said to me on this forum was ,read read and read some more. This was ok but trying to convert the books to the poker table was the problem! The only way i have done this is by playing, The more i play the more the books make sence. The games you play in may not be the best for you! There are numerous games to try, Give each one a fair crack the only you can decide which is best.
Personally i dont like rebuy tourneys or multi table sngs. There is a lot of info from forum members on this site, Some good, Some not so, One forum member helped me ( not droping names R ) his info has proven to be topcat for me ( ty ) Good luck with the book
