how to split pots work

Hi all.

I am reasonably new player and am confused about split pots... I play on will hill and often see split pots when the two players have the same hand and seems to be able to use the community cards as the kicker if its the highest.

Is that how it works?? as I was surprised to lose this hand as although I had a lower kicker I thought it would use the community card ace... I am richiedc below. can anyone clarify?

The funny thing is that we used to get about 6 or 7 of these posts a week. It makes me sad that that isn't the case nowadays.
