But if we raise isn't it going to be all in? And he only has a 6.8k stack, so it's not like we're risking a lot of it. I don't understand where the awkward spot comes from. Sorry to be dumb!

The early part of the post says that he hasn't raised pre-flop at all for 20-30 hands, then he raises for nearly half his stack, which is also about 4 times the BB.
That is almost more scary than him going all in, as its almost as if he wants someone to call, or raise.
Just my thoughts, and I'm new here too.
