After reading the article about Dan Carter yesterday, specifically the bit about him reading ten poker books, I was wondering what books you lot would recommend.
I'm not asking for you all to make a list of ten. Just which ones you have read and why they are good.
Cheers,
Haggis
Waltypies:Haggis i wish you were here now so i could kiss you
Waltypies:I think Carters sis is more of a long term thing. My sis is just a one nighter i reckon
Lucky_scrote: DAMNIT, I was looking forwards to some mod abuse! I'd like to abuse you especially Haggis.
Harrington on Hold'em 1 + 2 plus Sklansky's Theory of Poker are my bibles.
Ive just started the Dan Harrington one, as well as the Caro book of tells. Im too early in to them to recommend them or discuss them in detail, but from chatting to other people they are good starting books.
What a pile of shit! lol... I really cant stand this book. Oh and if you want an even funnier laugh he has made a film about the book and explains everything in the book... its very funny and looks like it was made in the 70's ...its cringe tv (as the fit twins would say)
You cant go far wrong with the Theory of poker and is a MUST read by any poker player. The only thing i found with this, is when i first started playing, and i mean back in the day i didnt know the hand rankings! (prob still dont!) it was wayyy too in depth. You need basic knowledge of pot odds etc to be able to read and understand. However, once i grasped all that i picked the book back up and it all made sense. Well 98% made sense, i still dont understand the benefits of; position, agression or anything to do with probabilities
If you want a real good laugh, then you must read Hellmuths book! haha... he preaches and preaches about the top ten hands blah blah blah and ive never seen him play like that, ever! However, he has some good chapters on the basics of some of the other types of games.
Phil Gordon's books are quite a good easy read and makes some valid points that i had not thought of before. I quite like his style of writing, as he explains everything in a relatable way. The guy is a knob, but his book is deffo worth a read imo.
I enjoyed Zen and the Art of Poker, illustrates the natural flow of the game and helped me to be patient and learn how to fold, has some good life lessons too, good introduction to Sun Tzu, a Japanese military strategist who has influenced Phil Hellmuth's game. I always go back to the book when I'm off my game to re-group, so I'd say it's indispensable.
Doyles Super System II, is good too, some say old fashioned but I say digest it learn his main points and apply it to your 'own' game, teaches some of the other poker games too like Omaha so you can vary your games.
