If you've already heard this story, please give others a chance to reply first...
On Wednesday night, Prowler invited me to London to play a cash game against what he said would be the biggest bunch of fish I've ever played against. Sure enough we walked into the pub and there was a genuine fish tank there. Lol, a good sign I thought The game was to be low stakes dealer's choice, with a £20 buy-in, 10p/20p blinds, and took place in a function room upstairs from the main part of the pub. Prowler had brought two mates with him, and we sat down like this: 1. Me 2. Rob 3. Jonnell 4. Prowler 5. Mateyboy A 6. Mateyboy B We start off by playing 4 hands of hold'em, and I get my stack from £20 to £35. Hand 5 and it's Mateyboy A's turn to deal and he chooses 5-Card Draw. I get dealt: K K K 4 2![]() Mateyboy B who has been knocking back the whisky like it's going out of fashion, shouts over "oy! barmaid, another double whisky"... Whilst saying this he leans back in his chair, but holds his hand with the cards in towards the table, meaning I see 3 of the cards in his hand. They are: J J J![]() The betting round takes place, with mateyboy B betting £2, me raising to £8 and everyone on the table calling. Mateyboy B decides to change two cards (keeping the trip jacks I assume). I change 2 cards and get dealt: K A![]() Mmmmmm.. Quads, nice The other 4 players change 1 or 2 cards each. The the next round of betting starts. Mateyboy B checks. I check my Quads. Rob to my left chucks in £10. Jonnell calls him. Prowler folds, and Mateyboy1 folds. Mateyboy B calls. I raise to £20, Chris says "all-in", Jonnell says "call", Mateyboy 2 says "all in", and I call. The pot is about £100ish. Now comes the showdown. Rob: A Q J T 9![]() Jonnell: 8 8 8 9 9![]() Me: K K K K A![]() Mateyboy2: 8 9 T J Q![]() WTF?! I then say to Mateyboy B "that can't be possible. I saw your hand pre-flop. You had 3 Jacks, and only changed two cards. You can't end up from that with a straight flush..." Mateyboy B squares up to me, and replies "are you accusing me of cheating?" I say "Yes, I guess I am." However, then Rob says to me "it actually is possible if he was holding, say, 9 T J J J and decided to chuck J J ".No matter how unlikely I imagine that scenario to be, I have to concede that it is possible that is what has just happened, and apologise to Mateyboy for calling him a cheat!! Plus, I don't fancy getting punched over £35. He says "f*** this. I'm not playing with someone who accuses me of cheating. I'm leaving." With that he storms out the room. The guy running the poker night then comes over and collects all Mateyboys chips off the table for him so he can cash in. Mateyboy A then gets up and says "I'm leaving too", leaving 4 of us at the table, stunned at what we've just witnessed. It reminded me a lot of the scene in the film Croupier, when each player round the table has a better hand than the player before . e.g Pair > Two Pairs > Trips > Straight > Flush > Full House > Straight Flush. Was I had? Or was I (and the 3 other losers) just very unlucky? What are the odds of a 6 player table with 4 players holding: Flush, Full House, Quads, Straight Flush?

Seriously, if anyone had JJJT9 why would you change your T9?? If you were to change your T9 the best hand you could make would be quads, if you changed two of your jacks then the best hand you can make is a straight flush.
A straight flush is better than quads, it's an obvious move by him. I really don't think you can accuse him of cheating here, he made the best play and got rewarded for it. Also, you should be banned for looking at his cards preflop, I think you're the cheat here Gus. I don't get what you don't get about this. |

Him being dealer, the game being the first hand (ie he may have switched decks), everyone having a good hand(being encouraged to play)and making himself scarce when accused all sound like a stitch up, but as woody says, it sort of makes sense that he could do that. Even though i don't necessarily agree that switching the jacks is the correct play in this situation, it's still more than likely that he could have done it.
I would be careful before you go around posting pics and videos of them matt, you don't want to get any sort of bad reputation for yourself for the sake of £100, these people have probably done it before and will have no problem defending themselves if necessary.

In fact, after thinking about it some more throwing the two jacks is FOUR TIMES as good a play as throwing the T9.
If we throw the T9 then we only have ONE out (the case J) to to make quads. If we throw the JJ then we have FOUR outs to make a straight flush (K Q 7 8 )Gus, it wouldn't surprise me if this guy is a pro with sophisticated plays like this, so as Wuddle says, better find out who you're 'outing' before you post any pics or vids, this thing could turn nasty! |
