I wasn't registered for the APAT tournament but headed across anyway with the plan of putting myself on the waiting list and playing cash games if I didn't get in.
I didn't get in, which turned out very nicely. The cash game was £1/£1 PL holdem with a £50 min and £300 max buyin. I had £300 with me so I bought in for £100 so that I could reload twice if needed and Walty sat on my right with £150. The rest of the table were mostly between £100 and £200 with a couple buying in for £60. The button posted the small blind, apparently that's how they play there but I still have no idea why.
Early on I won a decent pot with QQ then was back down to about even before my first interesting hand.
#1)
I raised to £5 behind 1 limper in MP with AT, erratic very aggressive player on the button re-raises to £16 and the BB calls. I re-raise the pot (£49) to try and isolate against the erratic player, he calls and the BB thinks for a while before folding. Flop comes T Q 8 and I set him in for his last £15, he calls. Turn J, river K and I make the nuts and win vs his 77. The BB showed his folded 99 for some reason.
#2)
I got to see a cheap flop from the button with Q3
and the flop came 8
2
5
, EP bet £6 and MP min-raised to £12 and LP called. I also called and EP folded, the turn was a blank, checked to me and I bet £20 and both players called. The river was the K
, MP checked and LP (good solid player) bet £30. I tanked for a while and folded as did MP, LP checked both his cards and showed the 5
, I'm 90% sure the other one was the A
. Still pretty sure that folding the 2nd nuts on the river getting nearly 5 to 1 is a bad idea though.
#3)
Shortly after that later I misplayed AJ pretty badly while tilting a little bit but rivered a straight to chop in a 3 way pot with someone else with AJ who'd played it just as badly. Basically played it loose-passive OOP on an A K Q flop and Q turn then bet the T on the river when a worse hand can't call (although it might, these were bad players) and a better hand can't fold.
A couple of orbits later I call a raise to £4 on the button with KT
along with about 6 others, I think we were 8 handed to the flop (this many players to the flop in raised pots was pretty common). Flop looked nice for me coming 7
8
J
, loose player in EP bet out for £6 and the erratic player raised the pot to £50 with £28 left behind. I made it £100, original bettor folded, then the erratic player folded for £28 into a £166 pot after just putting £50 in on this betting round. Nice play.
#4)
I make it £5 in MP behind 1 limper with AJo and get three callers. Flop come J 8 2 with two clubs, EP checks and I lead out for £10, LP calls then the erratic player on the button raises to £40, EP folds, I call and LP folds. Turn is a K and I check to the erratic player who bets the pot of £110 with £14 behind. I tank for a long time before putting him all-in, he calls with J9o and I win a nice pot when the turn and river blank (he thought he had a flush on the river, clearly didn't).
Most of these hands are non-standard and ery player dependent. The erratic player had just won a couple of grand playing blackjack and was raising and calling with some very obscure hands. Not long before #1 he had called a pot sized all-in bet on the turn with the board A2
5
A
with 8
3
and was drawing to 1 out against 22. He 3-bet pre-flop here too I think, or maybe just raised. He was frequently betting/raising the pot with nothing and I spent most of the time just waiting to play pots with him. After I busted him the last time he went to get more chips, was on his way back to the table with £150 and stopped at the blackjack table on the way. £150 on one box, hit blackjack so bought in for £375 instead. I left shortly after to get a lift back to Bristol, hopefully some or all of that £375 is now in Walty's pocket.
Ended up winning a little over £360 in something like 3 1/2 hours, which was nice. Was pretty happy overall with how I played having not played any poker for the last month or so and no cash games for about 3 months.
Excellent result Phil. Always good to have a loose aggressive player when you are hitting a few flops.

So here we are waiting around for a cash table then one opens up. I grab Phil and we sit down at the table. Now like Phil said the two better players on the table were to my right so i had a nice seat and Phil was to my left.
The whole game for me did not really start off to well i was hitting no decent cards so i played very tight to start. Taking down a few nice pots after being dealt AQ and AK i was fairly happy to be sitting with £170 from my initial £150 buy in.
The whole game itself was nicely deepstacked as most people bought in for £100 - £200 therefore giving us lots of room to play.
As my confidence rose on the table and my reads were getting stronger on the players i decided i thought i would have a go at a couple of them. The hand which i liked and i thought i played and read well was one against one of the better players!
He was dealt AKo UTG and potted it to £4 i was next so i potted it again with AQo as i wanted to get rid of the value callers. This was done and mateyboy flat called. The flop came down J,7,4 rainbow i believe and mateyboy lead out for £15. This was a strange bet by him a last time he hit the flop he potted it so i wondered if this was some kind of contiuation bet. After some thought i decided he may well have AK here so i could play this hand like i had a monster so i decided to flat call. Now the turn came a blank and he checked. This was my green light to bet and take the pot. Now a pot bet seemed like a stupid choice and if he did have a hand i am fucked so i bet out £20 looking like i wanted a call. He debated for a while and folded his AK face up. I like a tool showed him but he liked the bet and i think he was a little pissed off afterwards as he played a few pots after then chasing the money.
Anyway not much happened........................ UNTIL somebody fell from the heavens and gave us a cash cow. Now this guy was UNREAL!!!! He had just won a large sum of money of the blackjack and wanted to play poker but as the APAT was on he could not play unless he played our table. So he sat down for £250 and played a few hands!
Now this guy was pot betting everything even with bottom pair or the funniest i saw was betting pocket 3's on the turn with 4 over cards on the board! But as i have learnt from previous cash games (Woody you know what i mean) its best to let them do this as they will pay you off when you get a monster.
Phil took a nice pot off him and so did a few others and that was it his money was gone. I was a little pissed as i had none of it but to my shock he was back with another £250. The casino then moved our table to the main card room area and we carried on playing for a while. A few players came and went but we stuck to a few regulars on the table. Especially our cow who stayed!
Now the max buy in on this table was £300 however we all knew Mr Cash Cow would bring more money as he was a total luckbox on the blackjack and had won over £1200. I dont know if Phil had left at the time of this event but he then won another £2K on blackjack and decided to sit on the table with £1700. All of the players on the table knew this was great as if we hit a hand we would double up. So we allowed him to sit with that much!!
After a while a nice pot brewed which IMO went mad! A very good player in my eyes made a bad play and it paid off. Being £1/£1 pot limit i was shocked that the pot got to nearly £900 PREFLOP with 3 people in it.
Player A a decentish player had JJ
Player B MR CASH COW had 99
Player C who i thought was good until i saw this A10
Player C hit runner runner for the straight and he was laughing all the way to £850. Surprise surprise after 20 mins he left!
As i am such a nice person i told a friend from the London poker meetup about this cash cow with all the money to come and sit on the table and take a piece of this guy as it was so easy. After viewing the table for a while the rest of the LPM staked him with £50 each and he sat on the table with £500. I believe he left with £1000!!!! Well done mate
I left the table at about 2am i think and was up about £220 which was tidy. It could have been more but i was getting tired at this time playing lots of poker. I know i played a little too tight for that game and hence the profit was not as much as it could have been but hey it was profit!
Day 2 seemed to look like a good day as Dan Coles from this forum had made the final day of the tourney and was in a good spot to make the final table! But hey enough about they silly tourney what about the cash tables i hear you say!
Well ok then there was not much cash game action around until i found some people playing a £1/£2 NL table. Hmmmmmm i thought to myself this maybe a little silly but i thought sod it and sat down with £200.
First hand i bet £7 with A,10 preflop and get someon on the CO insta go all in for £39. Ahhh well with no reads i folded on the 6 handed table and thought i might as well see how the table goes before making calls like that.
30 mins later we get a few more players and we then have a 10 handed table. This was great news as two of the players were on my table in the main event and i knew they were crap. Hence i took their money! One funny hand. Mateyboy raises to £8 and i call on the SB with 7,6o. The flop brings j,8,4 yahoo i have a gutshot draw!!! I check and he bets £20!!! WTF I called knowing he has AK or AQ as he plays the hands like this. Also there were 2 diamonds on the flop so i was guessing he did not have one. The turn brought another diamond so i checked and he checked. The river i believe was a 2 and i bet out £50. Mateyboy thought for ages and as he only bought in for a small amount this bet put him all in all bar £10. He asks me if i have the flush. My reply i will show you this hand regardless if you call or fold! He then insta folded and i showed the bluff
GET IN!!!
As the game was not really kicking off much i left the table in a small profit (£112)!!!
I came back a little later when i saw a few more players and decided to play against them. WOW these people were weak. They were your usual NL donks and i managed in the space of a hour to make another small profit (£160) this time!
No big hands just people did not believe i had a hand as i got caught out on one hand which lost me £35 but that advertising made me loads! I had JJ one time and someone called my bet with J,7 and went all in on a 10,7,2 board. I was a little scared of the 7,2 mind you!
Therefore a very profitable APAT and i am sure Phil will agree that the cash tables there are VERY VERY soft!!

Isn't this a bit of a giveaway that you have nothing in the eyes of someone who has more than half a brain cell? You practically saying, "Let's just be friends. I want this pot and in return I'll be friendly and show you my good hand." It's nothing more than begging for your opponent to fold. I know Jamie Gold said this sort of thing a lot when he had the best hand but he is an exception because he is such an excellent player. You may as well be saying something like "I'll give you 10% of the pot back if you fold." Anyone with a good hand wants to be called.Originally Posted by waltypies

He sat down with £1700 on a £1/£1 PL table! Going home is -EV. How the hell do you get a 900 BB pot pre-flop when the best hand is jacks?Originally Posted by waltypies
Phil going home was stupid! He was upto 2K at one point as he won a huge pot with quad 10s!!! The guy called with AK on a 10,K,6,8,10 board!!
You missed out on more money
