Default The blonde bash (v. long)

The Blonde Bash didn’t start until the Saturday but Gus Mango Fish, DonkBox, WeirdWayne and I all went up a day early to make a weekend of it. On the Friday the casino was running £5 unlimited rebuy event (start with 1,000 chips and blinds at 25/50, rasing to 50/100 after half an hour) which we all entered. The field was pretty big, in the end they had to restrict entries to a maximum of 220 players as they ran out of seats, it also meant that we had to play 11 handed at the tables. We each put up £10 for a last longer bet and took our respective seats.

Nothing really exciting happened for me during the rebuy phase although I did make quad Aces in a limped pot with my A3 on an AA72A board but didn’t get paid off. I finished the rebuy phase with 2k chips after rebuying once and topped up to 3k. Mango Fish also had 3k at this stage, Wayne had 2k and Donkbox was out in front with about 8k.

It only took me one orbit to bust out after the restart. The blinds were at 100/200 and I got dealt KJs in LP with one limper to me, I raised it up to 700 and only the limper called. The flop came 8K2 rainbow, the limper checked to me and I bet 1,000. The turn was an Ace and the limper pushed all in. I figured the limper for Ax or an underpair to my king. Anyway, I had about 1k left and the pot was nearly 5k so I just stuck it in and hoped to suck out on the river. He turned A2s for two pair and I was drawing to two outs, no hit for me and I’m the first one out. DonkBox was out next, then Gus Mango fish but WeirdWayne, who was the shortest stack after the rebuy period, went on to make the final table and finish in 7th place. Good result Wayne!

I went to play in the £1/£1 cash game and didn’t do very well. The standard of play was terrible and it took me a while to adjust to the game. It played much like I imagine a full ring $10 max buyin game online would - there was lots of limping, lots of calling and not much thinking. People wanted big pots and didn’t need a hand to build them, if you raised then you would get called in at least 5 spots. This game should be real easy to beat but in adjusting I made a bad laydown and after that some very loose calls. Then I lost a £150 pot when I got it all in preflop with KK to find myself up against AA. I finished the night about £150 down but looking forward to getting back in the cash games the next night!

When I got up the next morning I reread the section in NLHETAP on beating loose games. I’d already employed the sort of adjustments they were suggesting so felt ready to go and do it all again. MattyH was gonna join us today so I waited around the hotel for him then we headed off to the casino. We arrived at 2 to find that it wasn’t going to open until 3 so had to find something to do to entertain ourselves…fortunately we found a bar so had a quick pint before we went in.

We all registered £30 for the blond bash (double chance freezeout starting with 3k chips and half hour levels). Once the game got going the standard of play was pretty good. I suppose that’s to be expected in an internet forum get together really. I was on MattyH’s table and he had a stonking start getting up to about 7k in the first orbit when his JJ made trips on a JQK board and got paid off by AK. I had been playing pretty tight while I got some reads together and was lingering at about 3k when this hand came up…

    Blinds 50/100

3 folds, MP2 limps, folds to me on button with AA and I raise to 425, SB folds, BB ponders for a while then calls, MP2 folds.

    Flop comes K J 3 – Pot 1k

BB checks, I bet 600, BB calls.

    Turn 8 – Pot 2.2k

BB checks, I bet 1.2k BB goes all in for another 800 more and I call. He shows KK for top trips and I use my slip for another 3k chips.

I’m not sure about my play in this hand. BB hand been playing very tightly and I thought he was probably a winner online, when he called me on the flop I gave him a pretty narrow range (I actually thought JJ was a very likey holding) but decided I simply wasn’t going to fold my AA as neither of us were deep enough. This is probably because I’m still thinking like a cash game player and not a tournament player. Anyone have any views on this hand? I was tempted to check the turn at the time but I only had a PSB left and couldn’t see myself folding…any merits to this do you think?

Anyway, I double up to about 5k a couple of orbits later when I raise and the Pro fella next to me reraises me all in with his 99. I show the same two black Aces that I’d previously lost with and this time they hold up. MattyH’s stack is now up to about 10k and we are the only two left in from the forum. I’m not sure about the order the others went out in, I think it was - DonkBox, WeirdWayne then Mango Fish.

Eventually our table broke and Matt and I were moved to different tables. I had a 6k stack when I accidentally raised over the top of an all in bet. Thankfully the guy who’s all in bet I didn’t see had K9o and my ATs held up to take my stack up to 12k. For the next couple of hours I only ever took down pots preflop without showdown, my stack wasn’t really growing much, just hovering about 12k while the average stack size slowly went up. MattyH busted out around 45th and I was the last one left it. Eventually I found myself playing for nearly all my chips when my AQ ran into 73s. First card out was a 3, the last card an Ace! My stack was still below average but it was big enough that I could make a raise preflop that was something other than AI. Which takes us up to my exit hand…

Blinds are 1k/2k and my stack is 18k, average stack about 32k. I raise to 5k from mid position with 77. Guy to my right goes all in for 20k, I call. He shows AKs, first card out is an ace and I take a walk ending up in about 35th position after about 6 hours of play.

Overall the event had a good structure and was a lot of fun to play in. Everyone was there to have a good time and it showed with a lot of good natured banter at the tables.

After a short break from poker I sat back down in a cash game. The standard of play today was even worse than before. There was one woman who kept saying “Today I be so unlucky, I keep no win”, that was just after calling an AI preflop with A8o and failing to beat AKs. There was one hand though that I think really sums it up.

There was a raisie preflop, I’m not sure what the exact action was but it’s kind of unimportant. Anyway the flop comes down 336. One guy bets, another raises and the lady reraises. The initial bettor folds and the the raiser goes all in, the lady calls. The raiser tabled 62o and the woman had J3o. Another 6 on the river and the guy with 62 takes down a big pot.

I played for a while and finished about £50 up. I stopped because a couple of guys from the 2/2 game had joined the table and were just pumping the pots with ATC and I didn’t want the variance.

Will certainly attended another one of these and next time I hopefully some of you guys can make it too.

    Nice piece Woody.

It was a great weekend. I was fairly happy with my own play. I just didn't get the cards later on and got moved to a table with two huge bullying chip stacks. One or other was raising virtually every pot and it was a case of waiting for a hand. I made the move with position and AJ suited and got raised allin by one of the deep stacks. I called, he shows KJ and you can guess the rest....

Had some decent stt success afterward and i think we got back to our digs at well gone 4am.

Woody, that Pro between you and me was Julian Thew. He's a very successful up and coming pro, but you could see why they call him the yo yo. His stack was up and down alarmingly
