No, just play small stakes and post hands you have struggled with.Originally Posted by badders

I guess my 1 tip would be try not to play hands that are easily dominated e.g A-x or K-10 etc as if you raise with K-10 or even call and the flop comes King high and someone bets, it's likely your behind, but also hard to get off the hand. the better choices you make pre-flop the easier choices you'll have post-flop.

Just play with playmoney. Most sites don't do much with playmoney, but Absolute Poker have a lot of STTs and big "cash" games. You start wth 2000 chips and you get some accolade or other if you reach 10 million chips. I managed that just playing in STTs.
It depends really if you're more interested in winning money or playing good poker. You have to gamble money to win money and if you're not very good you can lose a lot. I suspect this is what happens to 90% of the people who have just caught on to the poker bandwagon, because they learn how to play in high stakes games.

If you are a total beginner, i would make a few poker recommendations: (common sense really.. but here goes..)
if you are in a late position on the table (relative to the button) and you get a high pocket pair before the flop, you might risk all in if nobody before you has raised it significantly.
only play top hands: ak/aq/maybe aj , AA KK QQ and maybe JJ, as well as suited connectors (always nice for a sneaky straight or straight flush)
coinflips: if you have a pocket pair and want to gamble, you have about a 2% edge on your opponents who aint holding pp's..
Don't chase flushes or straights (if it's free to see the next cards.. all the better)
If you genuinely think you have the best hand when being raised, don't fold. reraise, or slowplay (risky because you are letting your opponent potentially improve their hand, but when it works, it FKING works!)
just general stuff off the top of my head.
also, learn how to work out your odds of improving your hands, and perhaps get yourself an odds calculator until you are aware of the odds.. (pm me and i can hook you up with a bunch of them for nowt)
- I would also recommend watching some complete poker videos (not highlights).. you will quickly learn to fold poor hands and learn what relative amounts to bet with particular hands (see http://thepokerbay.org for lots of instructional videos, wsop vids, and high-stakes poker (this is the one u want) )
anyone else got any tips for the aspiring beginner?

The way i learn't was by reading a couple of books, watching tv and playing low stakes. If you start losing money you will soon get tired of it and start to learn quick.
