Sometimes when I flop a huge hand I check/call even when my hands in danger. This is to give the impression that my hand isn't that strong, and is probably just a top pair weak kicker when there are possible overcards to come. Most of the time it'll still be a very strong hand on the turn and then you can start playing it, but if they did catch something fairly cheaply, I can still get away from it. So does anybody agree with the way I played this hand, and whether I made a correct lay-down on the turn?

It was PL as well, but I didn't re-raise him the full amount. I was basically raising him the amount it was safe for him to call if he had a queen, with the knowledge that a K or 8 was improbable on the turn, and by that time I would have disguised my hand as something else. I think this is a +EV move, because the majority of the time that he doesnt hit a probable out he will bet again anyway (after my check) and I'll get an even bigger pot while holding the nuts. As it was I think he played the hand like he had a queen so I folded.
maybe he had the queen and maybe not but you played the turn so weak you might as well have folded at the flop, fair enough check the flop and raise his minimum bet, his call made ya think but checking the turn makes you look like ya tried to steal the pot and failed, hes gonna bet into you regardless if he has the queen or not cos of your weakness and you've probably folded the best hand, a bet on the turn would of given him the decision, anything less than a queen and he might of called, a raise implies he has the queen, imo a weak play has cost you a pot there
Stack sizes are essential information, there is little value posting a hand without them.
Whoops I forgot the stack sizes again. The average stack was 1500 chips at the time, and I think we were both about that size. I would've thought a lot of the time if he didn't already have the straight himself he would've checked the turn after me, or min bet it so as not to look so weak. I think he may have thought I had top pair and bet a reasonable amount on the turn because quite often players who raise with top pair can't bring themselves to fold and so I would probably call his bet of 500.
Lead the flop. Check/calling and check/raising make no sense.
call me a tight bastard, but i probably would have folded that hand upon seeing the cards.
Preflop!
I agree you are going to get into too much trouble playing connectors OOP. Its an instant fold and not worth even paying the extra 50 to see a flop.Originally Posted by alexross1977
Although i would have bet the flop instead of checking it just does not make sense to me re raising and then checking the turn?!?!?!?

It also depends how you are playing though (how tactically.... not how much money you are making or the size of your stack)- play-style variation is important.
sometimes varying your playing style by doing these kind of things is beneficial and make you hard to read (or as Sklansky puts it - I played that hand like that because today is thursday)
anyway nuff said - back to work for me

There's no way I'm folding 87o when I only have to put 50 more chips in for a pot of 300, unless I'm very short-stacked playing two-move poker. The limper suggests the BB won't raise unless he has a good hand so I'm very likely to see the flop without a re-raise here.
Even without the limper against the average hand on the BB I'll have better than 25% odds so it's worth the call.
i dont see the point of playing 7-8 if when ya hit the str8 you put it down anyway!! waste of 50 chips if ya not prepared to play it when ya hit!
