Default 3 Tips for Beginners

Hi all

I'm going to be appearing on Student Union TV on Friday as a Poker Expert

One of the things I've been asked to provide is 3 quick tips for beginners to the game - players who just know the rules of the game, but nothing else.

Each tip has to be delivered to camera in 30 seconds or less, and contain absolutely zero jargon.

What suggestions can you give for Top Tips (either joking or real ones )?

Here's my top 3:

1. Don't play too many starting hands.
A common beginner mistake is to play too many starting hands. Just because you have an Ace or a King doesn't mean you have a great hand.

2. Know when to Fold.
Don't keep chasing a pot for that miracle gutshot, or other small outs (i'll explain what outs are, and what a gutshot is).

3. The 4/2 rule.
A simple way to calculate your percentage chance of hitting your cards after the flop. After the flop you have 4xyour number of outs. e.g. flush draw=8 outs, you roughly have a 4x8=32% chance of hitting on the turn or the river. After the river you have 2xyour number of outs. e.g. flush draw=8 outs, you roughtly have a 2x8=16% chance of hitting on the river.

I'll be mentioning the poker.co.uk site and this forum whenever possible.

Not on the web as far as I know, but I'm sure I could get a DVD burned off. Now if only I knew how to convert that to streaming content...

Dont say "i'll call and raise"

Dont call with bottom pair.

Always raise with 7-2. "Its a laugh"

Dude, thats the quote of the year from you and its only feb! lol

A good tip for a beginner would be to study the game before investing a lot of cash, with hours of poker on tv everynight and the tuition books/dvds available at the moment you can now find out cheaply what it took the top professionals years and a lot of money to learn.

Oh, another thing to tell them is that because cards are soooooted, dont mean they are good!

I like what your getting at but this seems a big area to cover in 30 seconds. Why not simplify it to something like "Bet when you are ahead and fold when you are behind" or even simpler "don't chase draws". The nuances of pot odds and calling with draws is not totally staight forward, especilay in tournements when stack sizes are generally smaller in releation to the pot.

This would be good to include but again I wonder if it isn't too complicated for total beginers.

Generally I like you selection though if you feel you can explain them clearly in 30 seconds.

The only other think you might inlcude is something about Playing aggressivley. Aggressive is fun
