I hate it when you outplay an opponent and then they accept defeat, even when they have outs. Two examples where this has happened recently.
Firstly, at the Live Poker League event I attended the other day. There was a 5 way pot which had been raised (minimum) pre-flop and one player raised me on the button. I called with top pair. On the turn I was given a flush draw and he went all in. Whoever won this pot would be the chipleader of the whole competition. I called him, sensing he had nothing, and he conceded that he had nothing. He'd practically already given up the pot. It turned out he had 5 outs, two live aces and three tens as he had a gutshot straight draw but a spade would give me the flush. Of coursehe hit his ace of clubs, so I went out.
A familiar example online: A player raised me under the gun substantially and I had AQs. I decided if he had a better hand he wouldn't have raised so much, so went all in. He calls with KQ, and immediately says "nh", as if I'd already won the pot. He caught a straight on the river and I was out there too.
Is this some kind of psychological trick?, because it annoys me every time. Or is it supposed to just be for their benefit. If you've convinced yourself that those chips have gone then you won't suffer when they do go. If you hit a miraculous card then you've doubled up and it's a "nice surprise". KQ against AQ doesn't exactly need a miracle though.
i was playing online the other day and the guy had made a large raise post flop...i was on a flush draw but not over confident and he typed "want me to show?"......it was a low flop so i immediately assumed he had a high pair or made trips but with 30 seconds there was no time to decide if it was a bluff or not and with such a leading question i folded....luckily he had J-J so i felt he hadnt cheated me and probably saved me chips, the raise was enough to knock me out of the satt so i was happy with my fold
if he'd had nothing i would of been mad as hell, not with him but with myself for letting something distract me from my thinking, i dont mind losing to a better hand or a good bluff but usually know better than to let someone distract me from doing what i wanna do, another example of the same sort of thing was when me, gambler and a couple of other guys went to the gutshot club for a 100 quid freezeout.......
one of the guys with us (who eventually won it) had a really good way of getting people into pots, whenever he was gonna go all in he'd say to whoever he was going up against "ok, i'll put you all in" , the way he said it was almost as if he was reluctant but had no choice and it seemed to work every time
as for "nh" ... personally i think people type that to try to justify to themselves that they played it right but got beaten rather than admit they did something wrong, i had K-K the other day and some girl bet $120 preflop (she was all-in) so i put her on aces or queens, called the bet, she had queens, neither of us hit anything so i took the pot and she said nh, i guess it made her feel better but it was a coin flip and there was nothing nice about it (apart from the pot)
point is...everyone is out to make money and nobody is gonna say anything helpful or in your favour during a game, live or online, and as both your examples prove they usually aren't as weak or strong as they pretend so your better of concentrating on your own game/cards/outs and not letting anything distract you from that!!
It was hardly a coin flip, you were a 4 to 1 favourite!Originally Posted by Prowler
i find online poker to be able to defy all statistics and throw percentages up in the air.....maybe its just me but i seen A-A lose to x-x so many times i don't expect it to hold up as often as in a live game, that being the reason i called, not knowing whether i was facing a's or q's or possibly less, it turned out i was ahead and held up but thats not the case so many times that its probably closer to 50/50 than 80/20 regardless of what any given poker site trys to claim
[Had the same thing happen to me tonight, was in a £30 game on bugsys club and was chip leader with 546000 chips,i know i should of played it tight anyway this guy takes about 150000 of me luckyon the river so the next hand hes the big blind and new chip leader he raises allin every1 folds bar me,i mean im sitting with AK
so i calls he shows 10
2
i cant believe it,well you know what happened nothing hit either of us untill the river a damn 2
the worst thing was there was only 24 left

Thats your first problem..... The live league is actually a very hard league to play in - not because of the standard of poker but beacuse people do exacaly what you said in your post - chase chase chase chase chase!!!!Originally Posted by Diceman
The Live league is a fantastic concept and gives new players the opportunity to learn the game.....you can only play in a hand if you have a hand - and if you are the type of player to bluff (which i never do) then you are going to have a hard time!!
However on the flip side one thing i have learnt from the live league is improving the way i throw my cards into the muck pile!!! Lol![]()
Ain't that the truth! I had 'fun' (using the term loosely!) with such a player last night... played and called any bet with any two suited cards! Even with a runner runner needed after the flop for a flush or straight, they remained in the pot without fear! I had rubbish cards all night too, which made it near impossible to play with him on my left... I think in this case, he has seen the poker hand rankings, and as such is looking for a straight or flush every time! Some hands I didn't get involved in, he would go all the way on such a draw, not hit it and still call with high card to a bet after the river, and show it down...Originally Posted by All In...No Outs

...Lol! I need to be better at that. I'd like to avoid such games all together, but they are still fun, and maybe, just maybe, we can teach some of these people to fold!!However on the flip side one thing i have learnt from the live league is improving the way i throw my cards into the muck pile!!! Ive already tried that!!! Still play the same game!!!Originally Posted by Mango

What an odd concept. Poker players complaining about players who chase straights and flushes at all the wrong pot odds, If it was me I would absolutely love to play these sorts of people every game!
If people are playing to the river all the time with only a high card, I presume they lost the pot more often than they won it? Or don't tell me other players only played and went to the river with junk too did they/you?
If you suspect that people wont be bullied off the pot by bluffs there is a pretty simple way round it isnt there? STOP BLUFFING!
On a side note A-K is only a high card. Against hands like T-2 it will win only 2 times in 3, and lose the other one. Against a pocket pair like Tens it is an underdog. I have learnt that "gambling" (for thats what calling all your chips in on it is) is a hard lesson. Raising with it is fine. Calling with it? I'm not so sure anymore. I am more likely to lay it down if I have a good stack with lots of play left. Short stacked obviously is different.
And back to the original post. If I knew that saying "nice hand" would wind another player up to the point of distraction, I would make sure I did it every time.
It doesnt annoy me at all.
I agree with you, that in the long run if you play like this you will be a losing player, but.....Originally Posted by Top Pair Ace Kicker

And i know what you are going to say, if you dont llike it then dont play - well take this as my offical retirement from the live league!!![]()
As regards to your point about bluffing - yes you cant do it....there is no point beacause you will get called down - Hence my 'retirement' LOL
