When you watch poker on the tv, you will often see some of the players making aggresive suggestions, such as asking how many chips you have left, counting out large amounts of chips, holding a stack of chips in their hands, stuff like that.
One of the most popular ones I have seen, is used regularly by someone I play against quite a lot. If he is in a hand, and it's after the river but he doesn't want to put any chips in the pot.
When his opponent is deciding whether to bet or check, he'll sit there lookng at him, count out a stack of chips, and hold them in his hand as if he's ready to put them in the pot. This often results in the player checking, he'll then check right behind them.
Now I find this quite amusing, not only because I don't let anything like this affect my decision, but mainly because I can't believe how often it works for him! He does this all the time and people still get intimidated by it!
If people fall for that one so easily I think I will try that myself lol.
Is trash talking classed as physical?
I saw a hilarious move at a live table recently. On a flop of Q 8 4, Player A moved all in, and Player B still to play asked him "have you got 2 pair?" Player A said "no" so player B promptly said "In that case I call" and turned over pocket Aces.
Player turned over a Queen and an Eight...
The look on Player B's face was priceless! Fancy falling for that one! Ha ha ha!
LOL. That's fantastic! I think I'll write that one in my book. "What? You lied to me.... you HAVE got 2 pair!! You Liar!"
heh heh

You should let it effect your decision. You should bet into him far more regually than you check to him. He may think he is being clever when in fact he is just giving off a huge whacking great big tell. Be sure not to let him know you know though!Originally Posted by Terminator
I am aware of the possiblity of it being a tell a large percentage of the time Woody, (sometimes he will stick the chips in, but not as often as checking, about 85/15 I'd say). In my initial post I meant "I don't let it affect my decision to bet". (I should have made this clearer). But your absolutely right, he thinks he is being clever when he is giving off a big tell, and the thing is he keeps doing it, so he is obviously unaware that he is giving away information..... if only more players did this eh? heh heh.
So we have people giving off tells. People giving off fake tells, then people who know other people are looking for tells so give off fake tells which actually turn out to be real tells....
No wonder people say poker is hardly about the cards. I can hardly tell whats coming next!
(Did you see what I did there?)
So basically the answer to the question is something like: "I know that he knows, that I know he knows that I know it's a fake tell. And he knows that I know he wanted me to know it was a fake tell. So, I now know that he knows I know it's a fake tell, so is it actually a real tell then? Or does he know that I know he knows I think it's a real tell so in fact it is a fake tell?"
Great thread...! But how does this work when you're developing your fake tells at home in front of the mirror before taking them to the table...?
...is it just me that does that?!![]()

I actually think I have a flaw in my game when it comes to tells. I try to avoid giving them off so hard, usually by staring straight at the cards or table, and trying to move as little as possible, that I dont actually watch other players to see what they are doing, or what their body language is saying.
I watch people when I'm not involved in a hand, but that isnt really helping me if i dont notice if they do something again when I play with them.

So what suggestions do we have to help with this 'flaw'?
