    Default The Music Listening Thread...

    The music thread, basically...

    1. I post up the link to a tune that I think is "Sick/Good" .
    2. The next person listens to it, rates it out of 10 and posts a few comments on the track.
    3. Then posts up one of their own. And so forth...
    4. Feel free to jump into the thread again and again, i.e. i could comment on poster 2s tune, etc...

Side Note: Any type of music is welcome: pop, rock, emo, techno, dance, dnb, etc...

Whats the point? There is no point apart from maybe discovering some new cool tunes off fellow forum peeps...

    My track...

Ahh I love this track and High Contrast - his remixes are virtually always top quality. I rinsed this in my car all through last summer when someone sent me a vinyl rip, its a great driving tune and I think would appeal to people that aren't usually into drum n bass. Also, I liked the Adele original even though its not my usual sort of thing really, so a strong 8.5/10 for me on that.

Anyway for my tune, in recent times I have been branching away from my electronic music roots a bit and getting into more "guitary" bands. I heard of The King Blues a while back and then saw them at The Big Weekend in Swindon and I thought they were wicked, couldn't decide what track of theirs to choose really so went for another remix, of Dizzee Rascal/Armand Van Helden - Bonkers (bear in mind this was recorded live so quality isn't brilliant)

Bonkers eh? I think its a bonkers cover lol. No seriously its a top effort at covering a really top song, I think they were really brave to have a go and I give them 8/10.

Now for my song. Unsuprisingly its by Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong ( who are playin in Bristol at weekend I think ). Where do you go is the song.

I like it, it's my kind of thing anyway tbh...easy listening pop indie. I get the impression they'd probably be better live than in the studio. I might go down and check them out in bristol!!!

    7/10

Ok cos I am the king of music reviews I am listening to all of these and these are my thoughts of them as I listen to them.

Adele re-mix: Adele is a poor singer and whoever has re-mixed this has made the track worse. I'm now a third through and this song has yet to display any virtues at all. I can't hear anything she is singing, she is basically just moaning. It's like two songs played at the same time really, with little in common. The super-fast beat is just annoying me now, it's just "dum dum duh! duh! duh! dum dum duh! duh! duh!" now and forever. Now there is piano. But this is too late and the song is a big fail. I'm closing it now because it sounds like it's just going to repeat the first 2 minutes again. At 6 minutes this is 6 minutes too long. 1/10

The King Blues- never heard the original Dizzee Rascal track. I think I've seen the King Blues live in Bristol once, supporting somebody else but not sure. This is quite entertaining though, and I suspect is better than the original. Yeah this is reasonably good, quite short, but fast which makes up for it. They remind me of the Arctic Monkeys though so that's a -1 on the score right there. 4/10

Joe Lean & the Jing Jang Jong - Where Do You Go: Never ever heard these before but I have heard of them quite a bit. I actually thought they had an annoying teenage girl singer but that must be somebody else. They seem like they would be worth seeing live but their music doesn't do enough to grab me. The voice is too generic and there's not enough feeling behind it. Other than that it's fairly standard nice riffing and catchy hooks etc. 6/10

Mando Diao - Dance With Somebody: never heard of them or this. This has started off the most promising of all even though I usually favour faster songs. The chorus has disappointed me though. It's too predictable. I don't really like songs whose lyrics are actually about listening to other songs either. I'm now hearing the mundane chorus for the 3rd time after a sub-par interlude. For the 5th repetition they have removed the instruments and the song ends. Started with potential but never lived up to it. 3/10.

OK time for me to give a link and for you all to rate it 10/10. As some of you may know I tend to prefer female vocals and (correctly) think of myself somewhat as a connoisseur/expert on the matter. I could probably give you a ranking of my top 100 female singers, which is competitive even in the 90s. At number 1 is Sandy Denny, and here is a track she performed close to the start of her career when her voice was at its peak. This is the only version of it on Youtube which IMO is slightly too bassy, and the recording isn't studio-quality, but it's impossible to deny the awesome musicianship involved.

    Updated for Cayton's post:

Camera Obscura: Yeah this is pretty good, considering the recording quality isn't great. It's a bit hard to tell what the guitars are actually doing but I'm sure they're doing something. This is the only actually catchy tune in this thread so far. It's monotonous but that's not a big minus when the tune is catchy. Outstanding songs tend to have catchy verses and choruses though and this doesn't seem to make much distinction between them. 7/10.

Boston- Also pretty good. I don't tend to listen to this sort of airy-fairy male vocals TBH, but I can make exceptions. The acoustic fingerpicking to power chord to solo progression is quite nice though. And the chorus with backing singing is also good. 8/10.
