LOL
I love Bruce Campbell. Really. Ever since I first saw him in The Evil Dead films, he became a legend, and throughout his other work, from Crimewave through to the absolutely brilliant Bubba-Hotep I have been prepared to give his films a chance.
Shot in Bulgaria, the film is about an American mogul, who arrives looking to diversify his business interests from the chemicals industry by reviving a long forgotten underground rail link under the citys streets.
Along with him for the ride is his wife who he no longer loves, and who no longer loves him. They meet up with the only English speaking taxi driver who it turns out is an ex KGB man, who now has to find other ways of making money after the collapse of the Communist system.
The city is also home to an independent scientist who has stumbled onto a breakthrough which will allow living cells from one body to survive in another. He is interested in showing Campbell what he has discovered, but after being initially turned down, he gets a second chance after both Campbell and his taxi driver are killed by a gypsy woman who is on the lookout for a foreign husband to take her away from her life of poverty.
Sensing an opportunity, the scientist orders his assistant to recover both bodies and transplants the undamaged part of the kgb mans brain into the damaged part of Campbells skull...
Havoc and slapstick ensue as the body escapes the lab, and both halves of the brain battle for control of the one body. As such we get Campbell stumbling around the city frightening the locals with his massive head scar, and also reviving images from the Evil Dead 2 where one hand literally doesnt know what the other is doing until it is felt around the neck!
There then follows a revenge plan where both men decide to kill the gypsy woman, who by now has also killed Campbells wife, and also seen her brain transplanted by the scientist into the body of a prototype robot in his lab...
I read a review of this film that ends "For many cult moviegoers, Campbell can do no wrong. Even for them, however, that was probably only until now." Well I wouldnt go that far. It is rubbish, but it is still enjoyable rubbish. I didnt turn it off half way through and lets face it what did people expect with a title of "The Man with the Screaming Brain"? Shakespeare?
5.5/10 I think.
