After giving myself the night off from playing poker for once, I decided to watch a couple of films.
First off was "The Big White" starring Robin Williams, Holly Hunter, Woody Harrelson, Giovanni Ribisi; and the absolutely gorgeous Alison Lohman. Holy Cow this woman is a looker!
Basically the story is one that has been told lots of times in different ways. Williams is a man on the verge of going broke, who tries to cash in a life insurance policy on his brother Raymond who has been missing, presumed dead, for five years. Unfortunately as no body was ever found, the insurance company turns him down as it decides to follow state law and only pay out after 7 years have passed, which is the minimum length of time the law requires before declaring someone dead.
Then as luck (?) would have it, a couple of passing hitmen decide they are going to get rid of a cadaver they have, by dropping it into a large communal waste disposal which is located outside of Williams Travel Agents shop. Williams discovers the body after accidently dropping his phone in there, and lo, a plan is formed... If he can persuade people that Raymond has returned, then suddenly died, a million dollars will be his.
The plans (as they always do) never go smoothly. The sudden re-appearance , then death, of Williams "brother" naturally arouses the suspicion of the insurance guy who as already turned Williams down, then the guy who ordered the hit on the dead guy decides he wants visual confirmation of the deed, so the two hitmen return and once they discover the body is missing, realise where it is (now in a coffin in the ground), and decide to resort to kidnapping and extortion in an effort to persuade Williams to retrieve the body.
Then to top it all off, Raymond, having learnt of his "death" in the columns of the papers, decides to return to ask his brother what is going on, and to claim his part of the insurance scam...
As I said the plot is nothing new really, it twists and turns a little bit, but nothing major. Personally, I like Robin Williams when he plays dramatic roles, so am still prepared to give it a thumbs up. All the major characters, including Holly Hunter as Williams wife, who is suffering from Tourettes Syndrome, give good perfomances, but I can see why it never got a big release, as its nothing too standout from the crowd, even with the big names on board.
Just watched this movie and i really liked it, the characters were interesting and a bit random, great location and although the story wasnt groundbreaking it kept me interested all the way through. Great cast, the film has loads of little jokes running through it, the main one being Holly Hunters tourettes, some classic abuse flys from her mouth.
If you have a chance to see this film take it.
